Biography

Huang Guaier, born in China, is a transmedia artist. She holds Bachelors of Sciences in Psychology and Forensic Science from Syracuse University, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Photography at Parsons School of Design. Her work has been exhibited in international museums and festivals, including Inna Art Space (Hangzhou, 2023), Cang Museum (Hangzhou, 2022), Photographies Conference (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 2020), Three Shadows Photography Award Exhibition (Beijing, 2018), “Top 20 Cutting-Edge Photographers in China” (Zhejiang Art Museum, 2017) , the theme show “Your Selfie Stick” at 2017 Lianzhou Foto Festival, China, “Governing Bodies” at Aronson Gallery, New York, and “Open Books: An Open Dialogue” at Connecticut College, New London. Her article co-written with Wang Runzhong was published on the first issue of Floating Island: Photography and Visual Cultural Studies (ed. by He Yining).

The tone of her practices is rooted in critiques on discourse of power. Her work explores gender roles in Chinese and global contexts, as well as the connection between women and nature seen as objects in human society, and extends to reflecting on and defying consumerist culture, capitalistic logic and anthropocentric hegemony. Thoughts on the technics, post-human, ocular-centrism, and ontology of mediums are woven into her diverse yet systematic art-making process, inviting viewers to question the complexity in our era.



黄乖儿，多媒介艺术家。美国雪城大学科学学士，心理学与司法科学双专业。纽约帕森斯设计学院纯艺术硕士，摄影及其相关媒介专业。作品曾入选清影艺术空间（“琳琅满目”，杭州，2023）、仓美术馆（“于暴风中心治愈我”，杭州，2022）、Photographies研讨大会（南洋理工大学，新加坡，2020）、三影堂摄影奖（三影堂摄影艺术中心，北京，2018）、青年艺术100（嘉德艺术中心，北京，2018）、Top20新锐摄影奖（浙江美术馆，杭州，2017）、连州国际摄影年展主题展（连州，2017）、中国册页：开放的书页（Connecticut College，新伦敦，2017）、“Governing Bodies”（Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries，纽约，2017）、等国内外展览和活动。2022年文章在何伊宁主编的《浮屿：摄影与视觉文化研究》发表。

她的实践根植于对于权力话语的批判。作品探索了在中外语境下性别角色的差异，以及自然与女性作为对象在人类社会中的趋同性，进而延伸到对消费文化、资本主义逻辑和人类中心霸权的元叙事反思与抵抗。对于技术、后人类、视觉中心主义、媒介本体论等的关注也交织在她多元又系统的创作中，愿以作品唤起观众对于当下时代复杂性的思考。
